Media literacy books for kids

I just came across, at Parents for Ethical Marketing, several children’s books devoted to the issue of commercials and marketing. This one is a Berenstain Bears book, which I’m betting will be good for the 3- to 7-year-old crowed, which is great because that’s when kids first need to be introduced to this issue. My kids loved the Berenstain bears when they were a bit younger, so I have high hopes for this one. It’s going on my gift list for nieces and nephews.

A book for older kids – maybe 5th to 9th grade, is “Made You Look: How Advertising Works and Why You Should Know,” by Shari Graydon. Here is a little more information about Ms Graydon and the book from the publisher.

This one seems to be out of print: “Hey Kidz! Buy This Book: A Radical Primer on corporate and Governmental and Artistic Activism for Short People,” by Anne Elizabeth Moore. Here’s some information I found about her and the book. The reviews say it’s for 8th grade and up.

So that covers everyone except 8- and 9-year-olds.

I plan to track these books down, and force my kids to read them and report back, so that I can review them here.
