#BraveGirlsWant take back media campaign kicks off Friday

If you are anywhere in or near New York City tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 11 – the second International Day of the Girl Child – get yourself and your daughters down to Times Square for the kick off of the Brave Girls Alliance campaign.

They are launching a seven-day campaign to “take back media.” The digital billboard in Times Square will showcase “messages from girls and people who care about girls who want a better, more diverse, and non-sexualized media representation of girls.” An amazing amount of work and energy and enthusiasm has gone into this effort and it is going to shake up media, I have no doubt.

Members of the Brave Girls Alliance will be in town to launch the event and will be throwing a party in the evening. Girls are invited to join in a flashmob. Here’s what to know: Wear orange or Turquoise, and meet in front of the Toys R Us on 44rd St and 7th Ave at 5:45pm on Friday. Look for the orange & turquoise balloons or women in orange or turquoise scarves. Dances will occur at 6:00, 6:15, 6:30 and 6:45.

Meanwhile this week, Mayor Bloomberg launched the NYC Girls campaign taking on body image and self-esteem issues girls face as a result of media messaging. Good for you, mayor!
